Sewage Treatment Supporter Calls Opposing Arguments a 'Pile of Crap'

VICTORIA - Jim McIsaac has heard the arguments against treating Victoria's sewage. He says they're not new and he still isn't buying any of them. "Those pollutants don't go away. There is no away. There's only one planet. They're going somewhere" says the Director of Sustainability with the TBuck Suzuki Environmental Foundation.

He's researched the issue for years and come to the conclusion what we are sending out to sea is hurting the environment. "Everything from toothpaste to cleaners goes down there. That doesn't disappear. It accumulates in the marine environment."

After a high-profile campaign from former politicians, health officials, and UVic scientists, several CRD directors are having second thoughts about the $783 million secondary treatment plan mandated by the provincial and federal governments. An upcoming vote could essentially signal whether the region wants out or at least to delay for decades. McIsaac shakes his head. "Is the CRD going to willfully indicate they're going to violate the law? That's where they're going?"

The sewage issue is also stinking up the Victoria by-election. Liberal Paul Summerville's platform is completely based on opposing secondary treatment - a project his campaign calls "stupid." Conservative Dale Gann says he would be in favour of the CRD opting out, and Green Party candidate Donald Galloway says we have time to take a longer look at the issue. "Yes we're going to be doing this at some stage. Let's make sure we have the very best solution right at the moment. Because of the expense involved so we aren't lumbered with a white elephant."

Only NDP candidate Murray Rankin is getting behind the treatment plan. "The provincial and federal governments seem to be making their decision based on science... we're the only community north of San Diego that doesn't do secondary treatment."

McIsaac points out that includes Port Angeles and other communities bordering the Strait of Juan de Fuca, which he concludes, we are polluting every day.
